Good job... that thing is really hitting everything. Good thing you can sit back knowing that those boogers can't get in to your stuff.

Hooray! Ok, I am not going to act like I am the great one. I am at university now, so let me tell you a little story.

I didn't fix it. I have no idea who fixed it. I have no idea why it's fixed.

Yes, I am as surprised as you guys. Last night I left my place at 6PM to attend my grandmother's birthday. To my knowledge, it was still down at that point. I'll start at the start.

No, we didn't get hacked. Thuesday afternoon, after the worm had taken down several sites close to MM2C in Google's circle, I decided to take action immediately. Normally, updating Apache and PHP only needs a minute of down-time.

Unfortunately, things went horrible wrong. gcc showed errors compiling both applications from source and once they didn't show errors, nothing was running properly. A lot of thanks go out to Kim Jacobsen (Boomtown.net) for reaching out a hand on trying to fix these errors. Nothing worked. At some point, simple commands were causing the server to die. Starting Apache caused the server to die -- only two hours later it would appear back online. Gzipping the backups (for retrieval) caused the server to die.

Wednesday I had spend the entire morning and afternoon to discuss our options. As Red Hat 7.3 has been EOL'ed, I was looking into migrating to RHEL3, Fedora Core 3 or Debian 3 -- at quite a cost, though.

This morning, on my way to university, a friend (hosted on the server as well) congratulated me on fixing the server. I had no idea it was working again and was surprised as hell. We're running Apache 1.3.29 and PHP 4.3.10 now and I have no idea why it is working. It's good to see it is working though. Some updating still needs to be done, though you shouldn't notice any downtime because of it.

As always, I am terribly sorry for the inconvenience. Some people who talk to me on IRC and MSN sometimes think I don't care, as I "wasn't working on the problem 24/7". Sometimes such things are just out of my control and please do remember one thing: It's December again! It's not like we're used to anything else Wink
