Post subject: City Editing: Projects, research or both? Reply with quote

Hi, my interpretation of the forums here at mm2c is that the topics are to be separated into two main categories - research and projects. Projects are simply put in the "Post your project" forum and there you can get feedback on specific projects, regardless if they are vehicles, peds, cities or even software.

Research, on the other hand, is about finding out how to do things with MM2. This includes file format reverse-engineering as well as tutorials on how to edit/create files for the game. This section is, in turn, divided into two subsections, vehicles and cities. Information/queries about vehicle file formats and how to make vehicles are posted in "The bodyshop" and information/queries about cities are posted in "City editing".

Is this or is this not a good separation? Personally I like it, but this makes me wonder why so many city projects are posted in "City editing". Please motivate your responses.

Perhaps I should "lead by example". I will give you my motivation for wanting to move projects into the projects forum. I think that the "City editing" forum is too difficult to search and having all these project threads in here as well doesn't help. In an ideal world, I would have a fairly small number of clearly structured topics in the city editing forum. I know that this is a forum and not a wiki, but some degree of structure should be possible to maintain in order to facilitate searching.

Another point is that if someone new to mm2c comes in and wants to know about cities or vehicles people in the community has made, wouldn't the "Post your project" be the first forum to visit? And if you think that it is important to separate cities from vehicles, maybe there should be two project foras?

I think you have a point with the city projects being moved to the "post your projects" forum. Although if it is done there does need to be subforums city and vehicles or something of that nature.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with everything said here. If all project were to be moved into the projects forum, a way of seperating the cars and tracks would be most appreciated. Either subforums, or perhaps just another forum subsection called 'post your city projects'?.

i'll second the possibility of sub-sectioning the Post Your Project section into Cities or Vehicles.

But then what would the point of the City Editing forum be if not for City projects?

For city research and knowledge transfer, of course. Same as the bodyshop.

I'm all for this. It makes a lot more sense.

Something like that is nice to have.

EDIT: I wonder if there could be an icon that could go by the outside of the topic name in the Post your Project forum that could be added when a person completes the project so that they don't have to clutter up the topic name with "go to page 123 to download this and that. like once the project is complete the guy that started the thread can edit the topic and tick either one of 3 or maybe 4 boxes that would set an icon for it. like "in progress; no download available", "Alpha download available", "Beta download available", "Project Complete". when you tick one of those boxes then you can set the page number or even the exact post the download is in. i thought i'd just put that idea out there just to see what people think.

This is not possible unless you want to heavily modify phpBB, and I know for a fact that Rippance has done more than his share of that. Smile

However, and I just throw this out as a suggestion, perhaps the author of the project thread in question should modify the first post whenever he/she makes a new release and put in a link to the post that contains the latest release? And also make this visible in the topic name, say by adding an asterisk (*) before the topic name?

P.S. Should this topic be in "Site Feedback"?

EDIT: I find it strange that we have so many "leave-as-is-voters", but not a single motivation for it.

i agree that it would be nice to change it, and i think the ideas shown above would be a great way to do it, especially the idea Dogbert had:

I think Dogbert's idea is cool. But I still have the opinion of, instead just have Vehicle Help, Vehicle Projects, City Help, City Projects, keep also the Post Your Project for the ones who releases cities with traffic or a playable vehicle together, like Yallis's NYC.

I just wanted to mention I am not ignoring this thread and will seriously read into it and consider the proposed solutions, but I am swamped with work right now.

Do post other solutions Thumbs Up Smile

I know you are, feel no preassure at all, this was just intended as a means to feel the flow. I am still surprised that there are so many people who want to keep things as they are but not a single motivation for why they want that. Everyone who gave a motivation were all for a change. Very strange.
