Post subject: [TCTI] MM2 City ToolKit - Program - v.2007.10 (2007.10.17) Reply with quote

Local references:
- Program
- How to create simple city
- How to add your own object to city
- How to add grass effect
- Objects description
- Description of configuration files

-----------------------------------------------------

Instroduction:
Few weeks ago I've stared learning how to create city in MM2. I've read specifications of almost all MM2 files (made by Freber and the other members of this forum) and then I've tried to use PSDL Convertisseur and after few hours I had small city (one road) in MM2. Of course I had to use also PSDL Viewer and INST Editor, because PSDL Convertisseur wouldn't prepared all files. Because I'm little lazy and I don't like to use too many programs to create one small city, so... I've decided to create another program Smile Finnaly I've called it MM2 City ToolKit.

Program:
This program is a complex tool which allow you to easy create city for MM2. MM2CT started as graphics INST editor and next came 3DS importing function. Now the most important part of program is 3D importer, the rest is just addons, you don't have to use it. Whole city is created in 3D Studio or ZModeler (or other programs which can export file to .3DS). You create builds, trees, roads, etc. (you have to use special names) in one file and place them in proper position. Everything is done in 3D Studio/ZModeler. Then the city is exported to .3DS and imported in my program. MM2CT creates:
- pkg files with all necessary objects (bodies, bound,...)
- inst file which set positions of objects in game (it also calculates block numbers for objects)
- props.pathset file which set positions of breakable objects
- decals.pathset file which set positions of decals
- bai file which adds traffic to city (I use genbai made by Yallis - of course with author permission, thanks Yallis! )

Future:
It isn't the end, I'm going to still develop and improve my program. I have to add more objects from PSDL. Now it supports only ground, roads with sidewalks and intersections (with sidewalks and crosswalks). You can create also roads without sidewalks, but in this version MM2CT won't create traffic for that kind of roads. I'm going to fix it in future.

About screenshots and beta:
I've already released two beta versions of this program, but they only can create PKG files and set positions of objects in game (create INST file and PROPS file) - they cannot create PSDL. The newest version can create PSDL files, but... because mm2x.com is down (so our site too), I don't have place where I can upload program Sad So for beta release we have to wait until DJ Decibel brings back mm2x.com.

Functions:
As I wrote MM2CT has many function:
- 3DS importer - imports city from .3DS and creates necessary files
- graphic INST Editor - it allows to easly change position of objects
- advanced INST Editor - for people who like numbers
- advanced PATHSET Editor - it works now only in readonly (I didn't need it, so I didn't finish it)
- bai generator (from BAI.TXT) - generates .BAI from description
- bai generator (from .PSDL) - generates description from .PSDL and then creates .BAI
- AR maker - creates AR file which contains city (for people who don't like to use WinZip Wink )
- PGK browser - it works similar to image browser, but it shows contents of files in 3D - it helps to browse standard PKG files from game

Technical informations:
MM2CT is created in Borland C++Builder 6 Personal edition, so it should be quite fast. It uses OpenGL library for displaying and ZipForge for AR making. The size of program = about 300kb.

Documentation:
I didn't create documentation yet, only short readme. I'm going to do it soon.

That's all from me for now! I hope you will like the program (when I release it) and will help me to improve it Smile

Very nice. I had some ideas for making such a plug-inable program a long time ago. I never got around to it, though. I'm glad to hear that someone else did. Smile

Of course, I still think that the best way to create MM2 cities is to do it completely within a superior modeling software via plugins and/or various scripts. Converting from 3ds is, in my opinion, not a viable way since 3ds isn't able to express all things needed. Most modeling software is, in their native state, though. Ok, ZModeler isn't but, hey...

You might be right, but I don't like ZModeler, I prefer 3DStudio - for me it's more convenient, so I would like to create city in that program. I don't know how to write plugin for 3DS (and I don't have SDK), so the only way for me is export to .3DS Smile

You are absolutely right, but many of them can be done through objects names, so in my opition .3ds isn't so bad idea Smile

Use ASC (or was it ASE..) export. It's a very simple file to read and can hold a lot more information than 3ds.

Maxoff - Took the words from my month Yallis Razz... When this software's ready, will we have the options to do the same? or this was just a prop that already comes with shadow effects?
Yallis - What's asbestos? Confused

Shadow effect uses decals. It can be added to almost every objects. I'm going to prepare instructions how to make it.
