Only the other day I discovered that no compression was being used before sending files from the server to your browser. So I just enabled mod_deflate and configured it. What this does is compressed certain types of content (such as HTML, CSS and Javascript) before sending it to the browser, after which most modern browsers can then decompress it again.

For example, the frontpage of these forums has the following results:

Original Size: 28 KB
Gzipped Size: 4 KB
Data Savings: 85.71%

That's pretty massive. My question to anyone reading this is:

1. Are you noticing any significant speed improvements?
2. Are you noticing any problems you think may be caused by this?

1. The forums load quite a bit faster than before (which is really good for me since my internet hasn't been working too quickly lately).
2. Everything seems normal to me.

Thanks for this, I might try this on my own forum since it seems to load very slowly.

To be honest, I haven't noticed any change at all.

As long as it's not slower, it's good. The speed improvements will be mostly noticeable for first-time users who haven't yet cached the site just yet (or anymore), but also for people on slower connections.

Yes, but I don't need to worry about that. We have a margin of at least 700GB a month these days. Wink
