I must have received a message from you on an unconscious level. When you sent him the converter and he started converting Chicago, I just thought about continuing the Chicago project on my own at the exact same time this discussion started. I had no knowledge that you and carking were trying this at the time, but it some how must have awoken me.

Anyway, here are some pics of progress:

Problems which need to be addressed:

I have exceeded polygon limit in Toolkit so I need to figure out how to make a map.

Don't know what to do about tunnels.

Don't know how to get 5 way intersection/Road crossing to work.

Need some help with UV mapping of certain GROUND_

I would like cloud shadows in this city. Also would like to see better lighting.

Which textures will look best in the city? Originals? New ones?

I cannot see breakable objects in-game, nor break them.

There is a moving gizmo that serves as a road block when a bridge rises in MM1. I need to know how to get something like this in MM2.

MM1 race announcer sounds implementation?

Work that still needs to be done:

Remaking of roads and intersections that are compatible with MM2 but are as accurate as MM1 as possible.

CnR Locations and Races with working opponents need to be figured once the intersections and roads are complete.

Objects need textures and normals calculated and need to be made in pkgs for placement.

and perhaps more.

Gonna be busy for 5 days though, but I promise will continue. Center of city nearly complete.

It seems like this should be more of a team project than a 1 or 2 people project. Carking could help, I could help, and maybe some others too! Smile

I seem to remember someone making Chicago for MM2 but I can't find it.
Where's the download?

Chicago in MM2 is impossible for various technical reasons. Just play MM1, it's better anyway. Wink

I am well aware that a direct conversion is not possible, although I seem
to recall someone having succeeded in making a clone maybe a year ago.

I appear to be mistaken.

What bothers me is that, like now, the forum wasn't all too active, and therefore, the guy didn't get much recognition.
At the time, I didn't have MM2 installed, so I dismissed it.
Then again, I could be confused with this incomplete project.

@DB A full conversion is 100% possible due to Mark being a PSDL doctor and he already did some of it but it is too hard too do for one person

I remember MM1's Archipelago being converted to MM2 (another carking1996 joint) but not Chicago.

Come to think of it, I may be confused with Archipelago.

I haven't been active on this forum since around 2008 when I finished
high school so my memories from the few times I have returned are
easily distorted.

(A little off topic....)

I played many video games back in the day, but it's only MM1 and 2 I return to.
I think it's because deep down I'm irritated at how unmodifiable games are today.

My mind was blown when I played Driver San Franscisco, it was like someone
got into my head and created the nearly perfect game...
That is, until I realized you couldn't go off road, pull off crazy jumps,
add cars or activate ridiculously unrealistic cheats.

Compare that to Angel Studios releasing an open source vehicle creation kit
for MM1 in 1999! The reason why MM1 is still my favorite game of all time
is that these modifications truly personalized the gaming experience.
MM1 traffic mod, Qwerty_86's amazing cars, Archipelago and the
awesome add-on race track were all made by people I knew (at least
on the internet). Starting up a program knowing that just feels so great!

I think the best argument for this is MM3... which is totally forgotten
in comparison. You finished the game, end of story. I didn't have
the money to pay for Xbox live back in the day.

I haven't followed video games in a while, but the last time I played something truly modifiable was Flight Simulator X... which lacks the
madness of Midtown Madness.

Sorry if I went way off topic, I just wanted to reflect abit on MM history.
