Post subject: MediaWiki Sites at Schools Reply with quote

Intro : Me and Brian have noticed (for a long time now), most wiki sites dont work at school, and i have a couple of assumptions about this, also, below are listed sites that may not work

Meta-Wiki
Wikipedia
Wiktionary
Wikibooks
Wikisource
Wikiquote
Wikimedia Commons
Wikinews
Wikispecies
Wikimedia Download area
MediaWiki

are all examples of sites that wont fuly load at school, but why?
my assumptions :

School computers dont support PHP 5 (newest version)
School computers re route the proxy to PHP 5.3.1 (bugged version)

This is a regression in the PHP 5.3.1 release. When you call a __call() function with a reference parameter, it is silently converted to a value, by the time it reaches the second argument to __call().

This breaks MediaWiki and has no obvious workaround.

If you have any assumptions, please reply!

They always say that wiki is not a good place to get information, so they may trying (although failing) to block the site. Just my guess...

EDIT: They work fine here.

Oh my god, lol.

Why not just talk to your schools computer admin and ask what's up, they're a great source of knowledge so it's related to school work.

No, that's not it. It's because the proxy is overly sensitive/hating of subdomains, and many of its style/layout/whatever files are loaded from them. Not that big of a deal as long as the text and images are available.

Bingo.

Seriously kids, this isn't all that complicated. The sites are blocked because they are not reference-grade material and schools do not want students using wikipedia or wiki-like sites when researching for papers and projects.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the computers you are using, whether you want to believe that or not.
