Post subject: Best PCI graphics card Reply with quote

Hey guys, I haz a question. And yes, maybe I should have taken this to the tech forums, but this was the first place I thought of.

Basically, I recently dug out an old Dell Dimension 2400:
- Intel Pentium 4 2.6GHz
- 2GB DDR2 PC-3200 RAM (Maxed out)
- 80GB HDD
- Onboard 64Mb Graphics

I currently have Vista installed, running like a dream, however I would like to use Aero. But my current onboard graphics are not compatible with Aero. I would happily upgrade to a PCI-E or an AGP card, BUT, the problem is that this computer only has a PCI slot (No PCI-E, no AGP) so my question to you would be, which is the best PCI graphics card to run aero and play basic games?

Thanks guys.

PS: Please don't lecture me about PCI Cards, I know they're slow, but I only need it to run Aero. And I've already been informed that some can run Aero, but I need that little bit more reassurance. Btw, budget is £50 - £60. Mr. Green

Aero's requirements are 128mb Vram, for games, well.. I'd go for a 1 gig card but the trouble with PCI is it's such an old expansion type that most people rarely use it as it doesn't contain anywhere near the bandwidth of PCI-E X16 + PCI-E 2.0.

even a 1GB PCI graphics card won't perform as well as a 512mb PCI-E due to the bandwidth of both memory and clock speeds.

if ya want to run games like the new Call Of Failure then expect lag, if you want to run reasonably modern-ish games on it, it should suffice until you can upgrade the board. Smile

:edit:
Ebuyer does a range of PCI cards, This GPU seems quite good value for the price considering it's Almost an Obsolete format.
