Post subject: Audio Systems anyone? Reply with quote

Any of you got decent sound systems? My days of Sony Mini Systems are coming to an end now. I wanna go for a separates system (amp, CD Player, & Tuner). Could anyone recommend a decent amp?

As for speakers I really like the Gale products. Although these are not sold brand new anymore, I am keeping my out on Ebay.

It doesn't have to be really loud, but I like deep bass with no distortion what so ever.

I appreciate you're not all audio enthusiasts but I thought I'd post this here as well. Razz

My Dad has a pretty nice setup, Denon/Marantz receiver with Kef speakers. I can get the model numbers if you're interested, the sound output is extraordinary.

If you could, please. Smile I did look at some Kef speakers and was particularly interested in these but £400 just for the floor standers would be way over budget because I want a subwoofer, center and bookshelf speakers as well. :/

I was tempted to bid on these even though I'd sell the bookshelf speakers because I don't want them ones I want these with the white woofers (which are literally nowhere) to match the center and the possible floor standers if I got them.

So yeah, that's what I really want. I like the looks and I was blown away by the floor standers that my friend has. Razz

As for amps, I have no idea. But from what people have said, a good amp will make speakers which are not the best still sound good (cos decent speakers on a crap amp won't sound good).

Thanks Tim. Smile

Right-o:
  • Denon AVR-2807
  • Kef iQ7 left and right
  • Kef Q6C centre
Nothing serious at the back, some random sony ones, as the setup is 99% used for music which of course is stereo. Smile

The iQ7s are capable of producing some nice bass; you can feel it without it being too overbearing.

That's one nice setup. So did he pay over £1000 for that? A Google search reveals this page which says the amp was worth £800 at launch! I can't find it on the net anywhere to buy. And the Kef IQ7s are the ones I looked at. Shame they're £400 brand new. If I can find a used pair for £100 - £150 I'll have 'em. Wink

Cheers Tim. Wink

Yeah, he sure paid a decent amount; ~£750 for the receiver and ~£1000 for the iQ7s. The center channel he got later on second hand at an amount I'm unsure of.

For that much money, you'd expect it to sound great! So the Kef speakers have gone down quite alot. £400 just still seems a bit much. :/ I'll keep my eye out on Ebay although there's nothing as of yet. Sad

Thanks for your help Tim. Smile

Well, I've got what I consider to be a decent system (cost me $200 in total Thumbs Up )
Everything's at least 20 years old, so obviously it's a 2.0 system. Used about 90% for music, 10% for movies. Has nooooooooooooo problem hitting the lows without a dedicated subwoofer Razz

For speakers, I have two Post Audio DM-16s and two JVC SP-95s. I'll get a picture of my setup later. Basically, each DM-16 has two 12" woofers in it while the SP-95s have one each. Plenty woofage for a bedroom.

And powering these is a Pioneer VSX-4400. I believe it's 100 watts per channel, but I could be mistaken. Unfortunately, I can't push the speakers to their limits before the amp starts to clip. But yeah, it goes loud, low, and sounds pretty decent for what it is and what was paid. Smile

Sounds good, Brian. It must be good for the type of music you listen to. Wink

For the most part it is, yeah. More detail in the sound would be nice at times, but I'm happy with it as is. I just look forward to the day that I can afford an amp to properly feed the speakers Razz

Well, if anyone cares, since I posted this thread I went out and bought a pair of Mordaunt Short Aviano 2s, a Denon DVD-1730 and coincidentally a Denon AVR-2807 in silver.

The Denon was £180 used on Ebay. Reasonable? That's what I thought but it appears to be broke. No sound comes out of the front speaker channels (A or B). Shocked

I've spent 2 days trying to figure it out but nothing. Did a factory reset and that didn't help at all. Manual is a waste of space! Seller didn't seem suspicious and still doesn't. He responds to my messages and tries to help. Mostly tries to assure me that it's working.

I'm probably going to have to send this back. But he's saying it was fine when it left his house, so do I stand a chance? I've never had any issues on Ebay before.

Bummer. I've never used ebay, so I've no sound words of advice for you I'm afraid! Best of luck to you.

Have you hit up google? Try finding your problem there, or try posting on a home audio forum (audiokarma.org is a decent one i believe).

If you have no success, then I don't know what you should do Sad I'm a kijiji guy, I've never bought something online from ebay.
